Introduction
Renne Hayworth, an 11-year-old who has a troubled past. Why is she called “The Angel of Slaughter?” Why is she so important in the story in the Trails series so far? In this article, I will be covering The events across 3 different Trails Games where Renne makes an Appearance as a key character. Please note, The article will cover up to what I have played so far to uncover her story, Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC (Second Chapter), Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 3rd, and Legend of Heroes: Trails from Zero. I am to understand that she makes an appearance in the Erebonian Arc of Games, the Cold Steel Series, but I have yet to play these ones. This is going to be a long one folks, so sit tight and enjoy. 🙂
Appearance
Renne (11) has purple hair with a lace on top and bright Honey Eyes. Wear a Cute dress and Shoes, the whole set. Ribbons seem to adorn her get-up as she has one adorning her arm, Waist area, And Back. The lace on top of her head is also knotted in this same pattern. Around the Collar Area, it seems to resemble sailor Unform with the same motif down in the skirt area, resembling that of an eastern School Grader. It’s interesting to point out that, returning characters tend to have a slight wardrobe change, but Renne´s outfit seems to stand the test of time.
Personality
Behind that sweet smile hides a roughed-up personality. Renne can be mischievous at times. Hardened by the events that occurred in her past, there’s still a glimpse of an innocent child lingering beneath all that darkness that plagues her heart. She makes her debut working as a member of Ouroboros, an organization acting as the main antagonist of the Second game in the trails series.
She is extremely smart due to incidents that shroud her past in obscurity, stuff I´ll cover next, and is merciless towards humanity, this of course is the result of her self-preservation mechanism. From Angel of Slaughter to Hacker in the orbal Network, to playing as an innocent child, Renne is the Full package here. When it comes to combat she ain´t no child and can fend off on her own, A Rough Tough character, who shows no emotion, only the smirk on her face and cunning eyes makes you wonder, what are you plotting to do next.
Renne´s Weapon, the Scythe
Renne´s Favorite weapon is the Scythe. A proper weapon for a proper Alias, the Angel of Slaughter. However, Her Ultimate companion is something pulled out of a Mecha Anime, her very own War machine, Pater Mater. Pater Mater is linked to her and therefore will obey her every command.
Such is the Link between the two that Renne Considers Pater Mater her only family in the world, and looks at (it?) as a person rather than a death War Machine.
Relationships
Estelle and Joshua Bright: From the events that took place in second chapter all the way to Trails through daybreak, Estelle, Joshua, And Renne will continue to be related, perhaps not by blood, but by the events that take place across three different trails games. Estelle playing the role of a big sister, cares for Renne, and the same goes for Joshua. Cassius, you have done an excellent job raising estelle to be a fine caring young lady full of compassion. because honestly, if it weren´t for Estelle´s tenderness, none of this would come to happen.
Tita Russell A mechanical engineer from the Zeiss Central Factory. befriends Renne since they’re pretty much around the same age, Tita is 12 in Second Chapter.
Background
Origins
Renne was born In Crossbell. with a Date of Birth in the Septian Calendar : S.1191/4/12 (Fri). Her father is Harold Hayworth and her mother is Sophia Hayworth. Later on, she would have a sibling named Colin.
In the midst of her early years, Renne´s father, Harold got hugely in debt, almost Bankrupt. So he and his family were running away from collectors and creditors, out of fear that the MAFIA might hunt them down. The Hayworths decided to leave Renne in the hands of a Trusted Friend over in Calvard while Mr. Hayworth resolved his financial Predicament, thing he accomplished within a Year with the aid of legal counseling, he brought back his company to the surface.
So it was time to go get Renne! When they arrived in Calvard they found that the home where they left Renne was burnt down, and assumed that she had died in the Fire. This made the parents fall into Despair, even attempting to take their own lives.
The D∴G cult
Renne didn´t die in the fire, Renne was kidnapped by D∴G Cult. She was taken to a lodge called Paradise, place where they would conduct continuous experiments on her to increase her intellect. It seems she didn´t partake in any of the Brothel activities of the lodge, keeping away in her room to play with her plushies or stuffed animals.
Her Lodge friends Cross, Etta, Adje, and Quatre, were the ones in making sure to keep her away from the awful things that would happen inside Paradise. It is only later that it is revealed, that these 4 friends were constructs of her mind to keep her sanity inside that dreadful place. A psychological self-defense mechanism. As time went by each of the four friends were disappearing, and when the last one was gone, she had no other way to cope with the stress than to take the drug Paradise was giving her.
Paradise was eventually Raided by Ouroboros Enforcers, Leonhardt and Joshua. Finding a weakened and naked renne lying on the ground with what appeared to be self-mutilation. (I still remember the images in my head, although nothing explicit, you could clearly see a malnourished weakened child with cuts and bruises all over her tiny and fragile body) Joshua Noticed this and Leonhardt said, the girl did it to keep her sanity.
Ouroboros
Upon Ouroboros´s rescue, Renne felt a great deal of gratitude for Saving her. She joins Ouroboros and starts participating in operations, quickly moving up the ranks until she Became an Enforcer (A type of High-ranking officer inside Ouroboros), she came to be known as Enforcer XV: The Angel of Slaughter.
Remember Pater Mater? it appears that after some tests, Renne was the only one capable of Syncing with the War Machine, and thus was given to her to command. She became a full-fledged Enforcer around the same Time Joshua got his assassination Mission of Cassius Bright.
At one point Renne came across a couple passing by holding a child in arms, lamenting that life that was taken away from her, when she realized that the people in question were none other than her parents! Did She run to them in tears saying “Ma, pa! I’m alive and well, thank Aidios we are reunited!”… No. Sorry. This isn’t a fairy Tale. This is Legend Of Heroes. Renne hears Sophia, her mother commenting on their late daughter to which Harold states “Let’s leave that in the past”
It would seem Renne misinterpreted these words and before she could do anything, Loewe Leonhardt takes her away and tells her that it’s her decision ultimately to kill them or not. She decides to let them live. Just what caused little Renne to not be reunited with her Biological parents? was it the fact that too much damage was made to her fragile mind, or, perhaps, seeing that a new child came to this world in her replacement, she felt that she no longer was… remembered… I don’t know. but the images did pull at my heartstrings.
What or Who is Ouroboros?
An evil organization led by Georg Weissman, who we later learn is a member of the Septian Church, (basically, the religion of the trails games) who is putting into motion an evil plan called the Gospel. him and his enforcers, Walter, Blueblanc, Luciola, Renne and Loewe. Don’t worry too much about Ouroboros, I’ll cover them fully once I Drop My review of Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC.
Events of Trails in the Sky Second Chapter
A lot happens In Second Chapter, here, I’ll focus solely on Renne. It is the Year S.1202 Renne is now 11 years old. Renne was now summoned to undertake The second part of the Gospel Plan led by Weissman.
The first time Renne encounters Estelle is when the latter performs an investigation in the Air-letten checkpoint in search for Ouroboros Activity in the area. Renne plays the part of an innocent child traveling across Liberl with her fake parents, two human-like puppets that can mimic human emotions perfectly, to which Estelle called the sight of the perfect Family. Renne later expressed that when they met again, she would play with Estelle.
So later on in the events of the tea party on Grancel, She fakes being a lost child in search of her parents. Estelle with the help of the Bracer Guild wants to help her so Renne tags along using the opportunity and ask Estelle what she knew about Joshua. Let’s remember Estelle is Looking for Joshua. Later she Feigns being kidnapped only to wait for the right time to act and execute the plan, Revealing herself to Estelle and company as Renne Enforcer XV The Angel of Slaughter. also revealing that the events leading up to her reveal was all her doing, including the fake puppets who she drops from the ceiling mercilessly.
She summons her real Father and Mother, Pater-Mater. Here is when Estelle asks Renne how she knew Joshua, but Renne dismisses her questions and tells her that At the end of the Tea Party, she would Gut estelle like a fish since she was the reason why Joshua wasn’t returning to the Society, but since she’s had so much fun she would let Estelle live this once. Renne now says goodbye to Tita and Flyes off with Pater-Mater.
Later on in Estelle gets captured by Ouroboros and Renne comes up to her and offers her to Join The society, as that would allow Estelle to see Joshua or learn about his Whereabouts. (Whereabouts of the stars, there’s a melody that Joshua Plays in FC with his Harmonica, after playing Second Chapter I now understand the meaning of the song)…I’m Sorry I gotta make a short pause here to listen to the music, Nostalgia is hitting me hard again, so here it is if you wanna join me:
Okay! Whoooo! I’m back.
So Estelle Refuses to join the Society. And escapes her captors. Renne, upon returning from a mission, notices She escaped much to her disdain. A little fast Forward, Estelle and party encounter Renne in the Axis Pillar aboard the Liber Ark. Renne was guarding a terminal and access to upper floors. Renne said Estelle could pass if she answered if it was okay to remain with Ouroboros, to which Estelle Refused, as she needed to stop Bullying people around to obtain what she wanted. Much like a spoiled child.
Renne Snaps at this answer, as it would seem Estelle struck a Nerve, and now orders pater Mater to Kill Estelle’s Party. Much to her downfall, Estelle and Company come out victorious, defeating both the War Machine and Renne Alike. Feeling down and defeated, Renne allows Estelle to deactivate the Terminal, but Estelle takes the opportunity to Console Renne much to her anger.
Estelle gives Renne a Light Slap surprising Renne, thinking back on all the mistreats she’s received in her past, “Estelle, are you just another one trying to hurt me?” After which, seemingly out of Nowhere, Estelle proceeds and Gives her a Hug telling her to believe in her heart and listen to herself for once. Now where is that Screenshot I took when I played this part…
I’m not gonna Lie and tell you this didn’t give me the feels. This is Just the start of what was becoming a spiral of emotions about Renne from here on out. As if like, Renne was my own Child, desperately in need of some Love and Affection. Truly is How I felt. Estelle, you’re a real Hero. When Story Writing is this profound that Gets to you, You know you’re enjoying the Highest level of Writing from the developers.
Anyways, Renne confounded and not knowing what to do with these new Feelings, separates from Estelle, Jumps back, orders Pater Mater to deactivate Combat Mode, and Activates Flight Mode. Before flying away and leaving, Renne tells estelle that Loewe, the final enforcer was waiting for her and party upstairs, all while telling her to better not die on her, because she needs alone time to think about what just happened.
This marks the Conclusion of Renne’s Participation in Second Chapter.
Events of Trails in the Sky the 3rd.
The Recluse Cube summons Renne to Phantasma, and once she is freed from her stone, she says she was having a pleasant dream concerning Estelle. But, as fate would have it, upon waking up she started to misbehave going all violent at the party then present, triggering an Angry Ries Argent in the process. Tita Russell was present as well and saw that both Renne and Ries were about to duke it out when she started to Break down in tears saying that it was her fault that Renne’s behavior was lacking since she was her senior of a year older and not leading by example.
Out of respect for Tita, Renne Stopped her Assault, and then she was filled in about Phantasma. She later decided to accompany the group, since the Lord of Phantasma enjoyed games as much as her.
Her resolve to stand alone was weakened by making her spend time with Estelle’s group, who showed her empathy despite her past Crimes. During this time, the Brights offered her to be a part of their family, to be a Bright. Although, reluctant in accepting she continued to travel and fight with Estelle’s Group. Cassius Bright, Estelle’s dad, was also in agreeance with this Idea.
The blasted Door in the depths of gehenna that said: Bring me the child that is attuned to darkness. I wish I hadn’t done that…The door reveals the events that transcended in the time Renne Spent in the lodge known as Paradise, which was explained earlier in this post. I think I’ll post a video so you can also experience that part, whether you break down like a child like I did, or it doesn’t affect you at all, you have been warned. watch the video:

As Phantasma was Collapsing, Everyone, and boy, there’s a ton of people in this game! was smiling and saying their goodbyes. Renne was watching and was confused, “Why are they Smiling if they’re leaving and you probably won’t see each other again?” Estelle then explains that that’s precisely why they were saying goodbye because they knew in their hearts that each would meet again sometime soon. Aren’t farewells supposed to be sad? Renne did not seem to understand a whole lot.
Here is Where Estelle Offers her to Join her family. To this Renne refuses and says: “I Hate you, But, I also Love you in equal Amount” Act later she ups and leaves Phantasma into the Real World. Estelle And Joshua vow to go after her and find her, and repair her broken heart no matter how long or where it takes them. Of course, estelle is not made out of steel, if I remember correctly she also breaks down but only to strengthen her resolve alongside Joshua.
These are the events of Trails in the Sky the 3rd regarding Renne.
Events of Trails from Zero
Read my Review of Legend Of Heroes: Trails from Zero. In the story Section Chapter 3, The Crossbell anniversary festival, on the fourth day is when events regarding Renne unravel.
Renne is now In Crossbell, after the final words Estelle told her at the end of Sky the 3rd. So she decides to go to her hometown of Crossbell and since Pater-Mater’s Combat system was damaged in the preceding battles, had good reason to visit the Rosenberg studio and ask Joerg Rosenberg to patch him up for her.
In the time while she awaited Pater-Mater’s Repairs, She messed around with the Orbal Network acting as Kitty, a hacker. She also ran across the Special Support Section, the 4 Rookie Cops outside Rosenberg Studio and introduced herself to the team.
She then meets Arios Mclaine after witnessing how Lloyd and Company beat down some Mafioso and their mechanical Hounds. Arios inquired if she was in Crossbell under Ouroboros Business, but she ignored the question. Arios is astute enough to determine she’s there for other matters and tells her that she cannot run from the Brights forever, Renne replies that it doesn’t have anything to do with them. Arios told her, as long as you behave, I won’t tell you’re around.
A couple of Months later, Colin ( Renne’s Sibling) was missing, and the SSS was asked by mister Hayworth to look for him. Lloyd runs across her inside the city but doesn’t remember Renne all that well. She is disappointed. She joins the SSS in looking for Colin.
She finds Colin who was being attacked by monsters out on the high road and realizes it’s her little brother, to which she starts to cry lamenting that she should not have intervened in saving him. Back in the SSS building, little colin sleeps on the second-floor bedroom, right next to him Renne, and The Hayworths arrive for Colin. the SSS members tell Renne to hide in the closet, while the Hayworths come get Colin.
Colin wakes up and asks his parents where the girl with purple hair like Pappa’s went, only to fall back to sleep. This triggered the Hayworts’ memories of Renne as they explained the SSS members about the events that led them to lose Renne. Upon leaving, Lloyd told Renne it was safe to come out of the Closet, Renne appeared to be at the Brink of Breaking down as she learned that her parents were beside themselves with grief for losing Renne. She does not go after them, instead thanks the SSS for having assisted in removing one of the obstacles on her way back “Home” ” She Vows and leaves.
Later, the SSS finds a picture of Renne in the cult’s Logbook. She surprises the team and introduces herself formally as Renne Enforcer XV The Angel of Slaughter. Lloyd asks if she was behind everything that was going on, but she replied, she was in Crossbell for Personal Matters. Also told lloyd and Company to tell Estelle and Joshua that she would give them one final chance to capture her, but she doubted they would be able to do so.
Renne Assists the SSS in the Final Battle against a demonic Joachim, battle in which Estelle and Joshua participated in. They were relieved to know that she was alright. Renne however, attempted to flee once again, having her fun and satisfied, claiming she would only get in the way. To this Pater-Mater Drops Renne as if it were concerned for Renne´s well-being. Aware that her parents never hated her, she still hesitated to join estelle and Joshua. Estelle once more, offers her to join the Bright Family. Hugging her affectionately and telling her that She accepts her the way she is. Renne Breaks out crying in Estelle’s Arms to Finally Concede and accept to be a Bright.
The moment was emotional to say the least, I mean after 3 long games of running away, and playing hide and seek, Making Poor Estelle and Joshua Travel the Continent for your soul, that´s some real love right there, and it fills my being.
Zero ends with everyone taking a Group Picture. These are the events that mark Renne´s participation In Trails from Zero.
Final Thoughts
Renne´s Involvement in the Trails Series is far from over. I still need to cover her contributions from the Trails of Cold Steel games spanning 4 different games! As I mentioned in the beginning of the article, I would only cover the events up until the games I personally have experienced, that way I can write original and meaningful content, and express how I felt about the game and hopefully, a speck of that sentiment has brushed on you, fellow reader.
So, from the events that transcended at the end of Zero, Renne Hayworth will now be known as Renne Bright.
Renne is one the most Fascinating Written characters i have experienced in any Jrpg in all my years, it takes you to such a personal emotional level, you start to wonder if the developers are on some sort of Black Magic. Truly, an absolute pleasure, if by chance FALCOM, you are reading this, hats off to you, and thank you for bringing this quality content to the JRPG scene. Fans need to know more about the Trails Series and I plan on spreading the word, Falcom´s Legend of Heroes is Truly Wonderful.
