Introduction
All RPGs are excellent choices when it comes to making a purchase to keep you entertained for a good amount of hours. You will definitely get your money’s worth by purchasing any RPG. In this post i will cover superficially the types of RPGs role-playing games that we have in the industry so that you may be able to differentiate which ones you like and are more attuned to let’s get started.
Western RPGs
I want to start off with a western RPG. A western RPG is an RPG that has that European development, a game that was created in the western world including the Americas and Europe. It has very mature looking characters and its grphics are hyper realistic. An example could be The Witcher 3, Elden ring, although I know it had some Japanese developers behind it but I still consider it a western RPG, Dark Souls, Darksiders, Skyrim Etc.
Eastern RPGs
An Eastern RPG is usually a role playing type of game that tends to have stuff related to manga or Japanese animations, characters being more cartoony, more manga style like. It´s graphics are more prone to pixel shade art and experimenting with different color palettes. An example of a jrpg could be the Hyperdimension Neptunia series, Final Fantasy 9, the Fire Emblem series, Star Ocean, Etc. These are known as JRPGs. My Favorites!.
MMORGs
Now what is an MMORPG? It’s a multi-massive online role playing game. Basically what this means is that a large number of individuals and players often connect simultaneously using the company’s servers to play on line, to play a role playing game online!. A very good example of this genre is Final Fantasy 14 A realm Reborn, which by the way i hear that they’re coming out with a new expansion in summer 2024 called dawnTrail.
SRPGs
Now we have the SRPGS, these are very particular type of variation of RPGs that mean strategy or Tactical role-playing games, we usually see these come from the East, Japan, and examples of these games are the mythical Final Fantasy Tactics, the newly released Persona 5 tactica, and the sort. In these games you command a party of people that move around in a squared grid, much like Chess, commanding one unit at a time, Fire emblem is a very good example as well; with many elements to take into account like terrain height, weather and characters abilities like attacking distance, number of steps to move and area attacks, etc. These are turn the based by Nature.
Action RPGs
Next up we have the action RPGs, action role-playing games, these are the types of role-playing games where you will not have your typical turn based battles, enemies or Baddies will not wait for you to make a selection in your next move, this is not a chess game LOL. It’s more action-oriented just as the name suggests and it’s a very popular subgenre. Examples are valkyria Chronicles Revolution, Y´s Games, and of course the very popular Legend of Zelda, yes folks, Legend of Zelda falls under the category of action RPG. This is more oriented to the more action like players out there, action prone. More action less reading!.
First-person party-based RPGs
Next up you have your first person party based RPGs. Now we’ll be honest on this one, we have not delved deep in this sub genre, but it’s the type of game where you command your group of party members from the first person perspective, the so called dungeon crawlers and where you move as a blob, Terminology used when moving multiple units as a single one. A game that comes to mind is Etrian Odyssey, or Persona Q, I personally enjoyed the heck outta Persona Q Shadow of the Labyrinth, and i totally recommend it! i do believe it is my first Dungeon Crawler.
SandBox RPGs
Sandbox RPGs. This is the type of RPG that has you roaming openly and freely in a sandbox world setting. It does not force you to follow a straight line for the main story, rather, it lets you wander off, deviate from your main quest in order for you to discover everything the game has to offer, from talking to random NPCs to discovering new dungeons where you’re not supposed to be due to your level. To put it simply it is not linear story told RPGs. A very good example of these types of games are Dragonslayer from falcom the early Dragon Quest games from chunsoft, and of course the Legend of Zelda.
What? leaving so soon?
These have been almost all the subgenres we have in the role playing game scene for video games. Please keep in mind that while they may vary from one category to the next, they all share one simple and attractive trait, they are all RPGs with RPG elements, like leveling up equipment gear weapon and armor accessories experience points random battles whether you trigger them by running into enemies or simply happening at random. So make your pick on which of the categories for rpgs you like best, but here in alas de pegaso we much prefer the turn-based traditional jrpgs, the action jrpgs, and the third runner-up could be strategy RPGs, we enjoyed so much Valkyria Chronicles remaster for the PlayStation 4, a gem of a game that will no doubt make you should give it a try if you’re into strategy RPGs.
That’s it for me! thank you so much for reading! Vicious Out!
